Residents of the national capital woke up to cloudy skies and early morning showers on Thursday, as light to moderate rainfall swept across parts of Delhi and its neighbouring districts. The rain brought much-needed relief from the recent heat, while also setting the stage for a wet run-up to Independence Day celebrations.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Delhi is expected to experience “one or two spells of light to moderate rain/thundershowers with higher probability during morning hours/forenoon” on Thursday, along with generally cloudy conditions. The forecast applies to most of the National Capital Region (NCR), including Noida, Gurugram, Faridabad, and Ghaziabad.
Morning showers were reported from several parts of the city, including India Gate, Kartavya Path, and Lajpat Nagar. Noida also recorded light rainfall, while visuals from Gurugram’s Basai Road showed waterlogging in low-lying areas due to the downpour.

Rain forecast for the long weekend
Forecast data suggests the wet spell will intensify over the next two days. On August 15, Delhi and surrounding areas are likely to see moderate rain, with rainfall projections of over 15 mm in some parts. The trend is expected to continue on August 16, with around 10 mm of rainfall.
From August 17 onwards, showers may persist but with lower intensity, with around 10 mm expected on the day and a gradual decline thereafter. By August 18 and 19, light rain or drizzle is forecast in some areas, with more favourable conditions for outdoor activities.
Daytime temperatures during this period are likely to range between 26°C and 36°C, with nighttime lows near 26°C. High humidity levels, peaking at around 80% on August 17, could make conditions feel warmer despite the cooler air brought by rain.

Impact on Independence Day plans
With moderate showers likely on August 15, outdoor gatherings and parades for Independence Day could see damp conditions, particularly in the morning and early afternoon. The IMD advises residents to plan accordingly, as wet roads and possible waterlogging in low-lying areas may affect movement across the city.
While the rain could temper the heat and improve air quality, the combination of moisture and humidity means celebrations may require umbrellas, and patience, to keep spirits high.
