Pitru Amavasya, the most important and special date of Pitru Paksha, will be celebrated this year on September 21st, the day Pitru Paksha concludes. According to religious beliefs, Pitru Amavasya is considered the most powerful date of the Shraddha Paksha. Its significance is even greater because if a person is unable to perform Tarpan or Shraddha for their ancestors throughout the entire Pitru Paksha, the ancestors are satisfied with the Shraddha and Tarpan performed on this day and bestow their blessings. This is why it is also called Moksha Dahi Amavasya.

Pandit Shyam Babu Bhatt, an expert on Shraddha rituals and ceremonies, explains that Pitru Amavasya is considered the greatest festival of the ancestors. Those who do not know the death date of their parents or ancestors can still perform Shraddha and Tarpan on this day. Furthermore, Shraddha for forgotten ancestors is also specifically performed on this day.
Method of Tarpan at Home
According to Pandit Shyam Babu Bhatt, the ritual of Tarpan can be performed at home on the day of Pitru Amavasya. The scriptures explain the ritual of Tarpan, which is described in detail, according to which remembering ancestors with devotion and performing Tarpan with devotion bring virtuous results. He explained that if someone's horoscope has conditions like Pitru Dosh, Guru Chandal Yoga, or Graha Dosh, special measures should be taken on this day. On this date, Pind Daan, Shraddha, and Tarpan are considered auspicious for all known and unknown ancestors. Many people cannot remember the death date of their relatives. In such a situation, the scriptures suggest Sarva Pitru Amavasya as the only solution. Rituals performed on this day provide peace and salvation to all departed souls.
Worship Method and Special Rules
Pandit Bhatt explained that on Pitru Amavasya, one should wake up early in the morning, bathe, and meditate. After this, one should purify the ancestral place and remember and worship the ancestors. Then, the ritual offering of tarpan should be performed. Offering Panchavali is considered especially important on this day. Panchavali means setting aside a portion of the food prepared after the tarpan for a cow, a dog, a crow, a guest, and a portion for the gods.
According to religious beliefs, performing Shraddha rituals on Pitru Amavasya not only satisfies the ancestors but also paves the way for happiness, prosperity, and peace in the family. Therefore, on this special day, everyone should remember their ancestors with reverence and devotion.
