Mathura, Uttar Pradesh: A shocking incident has emerged from Vrindavan, Mathura, where a young woman from Agra was allegedly raped after being lured under the pretext of arranging a private meeting with Saint Premanand Maharaj. Police have swiftly arrested the accused and sent him to jail following the victim’s complaint.
According to reports, the accused deceived the woman by claiming he could help her meet the revered spiritual leader, who is currently unwell. The victim was called from Agra to Mathura, where the accused allegedly spiked her drink and committed the crime.
Accused Promised ‘Private Darshan’ with Saint Premanand MaharajAs per the FIR filed at Vrindavan Police Station, the survivor stated that she had been contacted on Instagram by a man who introduced himself as someone close to Premanand Maharaj. He promised her a personal audience with the saint and asked her to travel from Agra to Vrindavan.
Upon arrival, the accused reportedly took her to a guesthouse, offering her tea that had been mixed with a sedative substance. After consuming it, the woman lost consciousness. Taking advantage of her condition, the accused allegedly sexually assaulted her.
When she regained consciousness, she immediately approached the Vrindavan police station and lodged a complaint detailing the entire incident.
Police Action and ArrestVrindavan Police registered a case under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) pertaining to rape and administration of intoxicating substances. The accused, identified as Sundaram Rajput, a resident of Mathura, was arrested within hours of the complaint.
A senior police official confirmed the arrest, stating:
“The victim from Agra submitted a written complaint alleging that a local man drugged her and sexually assaulted her. Based on her testimony and preliminary medical evidence, a case was filed and the accused has been produced before the court.”
The accused is currently in judicial custody, and further investigation is underway. Authorities are also probing whether any other individuals were involved in misleading devotees under similar pretenses.
Premanand Maharaj’s Name Misused in the DeceptionThe accused allegedly used the name of Saint Premanand Maharaj, a respected spiritual figure in Vrindavan, to gain the victim’s trust. Sources say the saint’s followers are outraged that his name was exploited for such a heinous act.
This case has not only caused public anger but also raised questions about the increasing misuse of social media platforms like Instagram to deceive and exploit innocent people, especially women seeking spiritual or personal guidance.
Social Media Trap: A Growing ConcernLaw enforcement officials have repeatedly warned citizens to remain cautious about online messages or offers promising personal meetings with high-profile personalities. Criminals often use such tactics to trap victims emotionally and physically, exploiting their faith and trust.
Police have urged the public to verify all claims and avoid meeting strangers alone. Authorities are also monitoring online activity related to the case to identify whether the accused had prior records or accomplices.
Public Outrage and Demand for Strict ActionThe case has triggered widespread outrage in both Mathura and Agra, with citizens demanding harsh punishment for the perpetrator. Women’s rights activists have called for fast-track court proceedings to ensure swift justice.
Meanwhile, police have assured that the investigation will be conducted with full transparency and that the victim’s identity will remain protected as per law.
