Dog trainer says your pet will stop barking at other dogs if you do 1 simple thing

Dog owners who are fed up with their four-legged pal barking at other dogs can breathe a huge sigh of relief, as there is one simple thing you can do. Many dogs can get in the habit of loudly barking at other dogs, which could be down to excitement, fear or frustration.

Dogs also use barking to show how they feel and communicate with other dogs. The reason behind their barking can change depending on the situation. Excessive barking can be annoying and could be a sign of a behavioural problem. Amelia Steele, a dog trainer and behaviourist, has revealed what to do to understand why your dog is barking and how to quieten your companion.

Ms Steele says the first thing you should do is try and understand why your dog is barking, once you have an idea it can address "the underlying emotion".

If your dog is barking at fellow dogs you can easily address this by getting your pet to look at other dogs and change the association to make it a positive.

Ms Steele told The Guardian: "The key, says Steele, is to look at why the dog is barking: 'Are they scared of something? Are they alert barking? Are they overexcited and frustrated?'

"When you have figured this out, address that underlying emotion.

"If a dog was barking at other dogs on a walk, we would look at if they are scared of other dogs, and change that association, to make it positive again. When the dog looks at another dog, give them a treat, so they feel good about seeing dogs."

The expert adds that some dogs naturally bark more than others due to their breed or personality, says Steele. "I've got a golden retriever and a German shepherd. My German shepherd will bark at the door, while the golden retriever sits there staring blankly into space."

Dogs trust urge owners to not tell your dog off if they are barking as this could make them anxious or confused about you.

Instead reward your pooch for staying quiet.
