Drains will be clear and unblocked when 1 kitchen item is placed on the plug hole

A cleaning fan has shared a simple method to help unblock and clean sinks drains with minimal effort. Lily, who goes by Clean with Lily on TikTok, revealed two quick methods for cleaning smelly and blocked drains.

While one method uses a combination of two highly touted natural products, the other uses a common chemical kitchen item which is primarily used for another purpose. In her video, Lily shared that you can either clean drains with a mixture of baking soda and white vinegar, or use a dishwasher tablet. The method is incredibly simple and requires minimal effort.

Place the dishwasher tablet in the plug hole of the sink, then pour enough boiling water over the tablet to make sure it dissolves completely.

Dishwasher tablets mixed with hot water can effectively remove grease and tough grime from sink drains due to the alkaline salts and other chemicals contained in the tablets. The chemicals work to break down grease and food residue, while hot water helps to loosen the grease for easier removal.

Justin Carpenter, cleaning expert at Modern Maids, explained the process to Homes & Gardens: "Drop a dishwashing tablet into each drain in your home to neutralize odors and leave behind a pleasant scent. You can follow up with boiling water to help to dissolve any blockages or grease build-up, allowing the water to flow freely again."

However, this dishwasher tablet hack isn't suitable for shower drains. This is because dishwasher tablets aren't designed to dissolve hair blockages, and boiling water could warp pipes made from plastic.

Allrecipes highlighted that dishwasher pods contain soap which has been specially formulated to tackle the toughest, and greasiest stains. It explained that pods can be used to clean washing machines, toilets, stove tops, and even mugs.

The same method has been used to help remove grease from air fryers, too. Simply pop a dishwasher tablet in the tray and pour over boiling water.

Leaving the mixture to soak to help loosen any burnt-on food. Once enough time has gone for the dishwasher tablets to work their magic, pour out the greasy water, before giving the baskets a thorough rinse under the tap.
