Money Saving Expert Martin Lewis has shared handy advice on how to keep your home warm this winter, and it doesn't cost a penny. The personal finance expert is known for sharing his savvy tips through his website, podcast and ITV programme, The Martin Lewis Money Show Live, to save the nation money.
However, one recommendation has stood the test of time, having disclosed the winter advice on his ITV show several years ago. On the official MSE website, his team of experts notes the segment was filmed in November 2022 and confirms "the tips still work". Following the Ofgem October price cap rise, the advice remains just as useful this year.
Not only did Martin Lewis reiterate that households should close curtains as the sun goes down to trap the heat in, but he also recommended lining thermal curtains with fleece - though he warned you must check it complies with fire-safety regulations.
He said: "When the sun is shining, it is letting light and heat into the house, so you want the curtains open. When it gets dark, it's not, so you want to keep the heat in by closing the curtains.
"I know we all know that, but doing it rigorously can help insulate, especially if you line it with a fleece. There are lots of tips online on how to do that, and really cheaply do it yourself."
With daylight saving having kicked in overnight on Sunday, 26 October, the sun is due to set much earlier this week, at around 4.45pm.
On Mumsnet, one user shared: "All mine are interlined with cheap ikea fleeces. Makes the rooms warmer and is very cheap and easy to do."
To follow the simple hack, simply align the fleece inside the curtain and sew it to the top edge, either by hand or with a machine.
Then hem the sides and bottom, making sure the fleece is slightly shorter than the main curtain fabric to prevent it from peeking out when the curtains are closed.
