'Hard taskmaster': Satish Golcha takes charge as new Delhi Police Commissioner

NEW DELHI: Satish Golcha, a 1992-batch IPS officer , was appointed the new police commissioner of Delhi on Thursday, a day after Delhi CM Rekha Gupta was attacked at her residence. DG (homeguards) SBK Singh was holding the additonal charge of police chief since the incumbent Sanjay Arora retired on July 31.

Considered to be a no-nonsense officer, Golcha was currently serving as Director General (prisons) in Delhi and is credited with restoring peace and normalcy in a jail which had been otherwise surrounded with chaos and controversy in the last few years.

Known for his impeccable integrity, Golcha is a hard taskmaster with a keen understanding of policing. He has served in a range of designations in the ranks of DCP, joint commissioner and Special CP in Delhi Police. Golcha was earlier the chief of law and order in Delhi Police besides heading the intelligence division in the force. He also served as the DGP of Arunachal Pradesh.

In 2023, Golcha was handpicked to restore order in Delhi jails. With high-profile political inmates in jail, previous fiascos involving jail officials to the rank of DG and the raging controversies of inmates like Sumesh Chandrasekhar, the govt was cautious in choosing the right man for the job.

In Tihar, Golcha controlled the city gangs that were being run from jail, curbed mobile use by inmates and other illegal activities which had been a challenge for the prison administration besides the frequent incidents of violence in jail. 2023 had witnessed two sensational killings in jail.
